Billingsgate market is moving .... so come and visit before it is gone!

Billingsgate is the largest inland seafood market in the UK - with over 120 species of fish and shellfish from all around the globe. Displayed as samples - the boxes of many different types of seafood are out for show. There is always plenty of familiar species: cod, haddock, plaice and mackerel as well as less well known UK landed British species - hake, halibut, turbot etc. Over 50% of the fish and shellfish that we eat if now farmed and many of these fish will be available to view too. There is usually a bright array of many exotic species on display and don't forget all the shellfish. If it is available - it will be on the market.

If you are one of the many who have always meant to visit Billingsgate just to see what actually happens - or to buy some fish - we run these early morning visits to give you a glimpse into this historic market.

Join us for a a cup of tea or coffee at 6am and a briefing with an explanation on how the market works, (It IS early... but really worth the effort!) and a little about the fascinating history of the 3 City Markets (Smithfield and New Spitalfields)

In small groups of 6 - 7 people we head onto the trading floor and take a 90 minute look at all the available species and how to assess the quality of each.  There will be plenty of opportunity to purchase seafood during the visit - but remember to bring cash if you can as only a handful of merchants will take cards.

After the visit - we head back into the kitchen to enjoy a cooked breakfast - often steaming Manx Kipper Kedgeree or Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs.

What you take home

A glimpse into the day to day workings of this historic fish market.

Can I buy fish?

Definitely - all you need to do is bring cash and a cool bag. Let us know when you arrive at the school that you intend to buy and we will ensure that we allocate time to do this as part of the visit. You don't need to know exactly what you want to purchase as we can offer advice about choice.
