Customers get the chance to get hands-on with fishmongers across the country

Seafood lovers across the country will have the opportunity to get behind the fish counter and practice their filleting skills with a certified Master Fishmonger during this year’s Seafood Week (4th – 11th October). The open day sessions will be held at various, independent fishmonger shops across the UK. The initiative is part of a national campaign, established to encourage the public to increase their seafood consumption in line with the recommended two portions per week.

Budding professional fishmongers will also have the chance to use the open day to show off their skills and become certified under the Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS). Those deemed worthy of certification by the Master Fishmongers, will join an elite list of fishmongers to receive their award at a ceremony held at the historic Fishmongers’ Hall in London.

Managed by the Worship Company of Fishmongers, the Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS) recognises professional excellence across a range of levels within the seafood industry. The Guild has been helping to uphold standards of Fishmongering since 1272.

If you’re interested in taking advantage of the open day, the schedule of open days is as follows:

- Wellgate Fisheries: Clitheroe – Friday 11th of October
- Cross of York: York – Thursday 10th of October
- GCH Fishmongers: Bedford – Wednesday 9th of October
- W. Stevenson & Sons: Newlyn – Monday 7th of October

Tickets cost £5 and spaces are limited.

One of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of the City of London, the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers has been closely linked to London’s Fish Trade for over 700 years. The Company’s Fisheries Charitable Trust engages in a wide range of projects and grant funding to support fish trading in the UK alongside marine and freshwater conservation, fisheries and aquaculture.

Seafood Week is an annual campaign aimed at getting more people to eat more fish, more often. The campaign is co-ordinated by Seafish, a non-departmental government body.

The MFS celebrates professional excellence by certifying fishmongers with extensive professional skills and knowledge. Recognising achievement across all levels, the Standard provides a system of nationally-recognised tiers. The Standard strives to encourage and enable a high standard of skill and the growth of knowledge about the seafood industry.
